Overview of Service / Programmes & Certification Offered

Tuition is provided for adults who wish to learn or improve their reading, writing, spelling or basic maths. Tuition can be arranged during daytime or evening on a one to one basis or in small groups. Learners have the option of acquiring accreditation by FETAC (Further Education Training Awards Council).
Tuition is free.

 

Intensive Tuition Courses

Intensive Tuition Courses are provided for small groups of 6 to 8 learners.  These courses run for 6 hours per week over 14 weeks. 
Tuition is free.

 

Family Learning Courses

A range of Family Learning Courses are offered throughout the West Galway area.  The main aim of these courses is to equip parents with skills to help develop their children’s language and reading skills.  Courses are also offered to support parents in helping their children with primary school maths.

Home Study Skills (accredited by FETAC)

(20 hours tuition over 10 weeks)

Topics covered on this course include:

  • Identifying the skills learnt by children through play and linking those skills to subject learnt in school
  • Exploring useful resources for play
  • Expanding child’s speaking and listening skills
  • Discussing approaches to support a child’s reading
  • Identifying some methods to help children with spelling and writing
  • Exploring everyday maths and ways in which parents can support their children’s maths
  • Learning how to help children in particular area of maths.
  • Behaviour and discipline issues

 

Storysacks Course

(12 hours tuition over 6 weeks)

This course is aimed at parents of young children up to 7 years.
A storysack is a large cloth bag containing a good quality young child’s picture book with supporting materials such as soft toys, tape or cd of the story and props relating to characters and items in the book.  The course involves making a storysack and learning how to use it with your child.  Storysacks will help develop and improve children’s reading skills and encourage a lifelong love of reading.

 

Maths for Parents of Primary School Children

(Tuition times vary according to the needs of the group)
This course is run by a trained Primary School Teacher and equips parents with the skills to help their children with primary school maths.

 

Irish for Parents of Primary School Children

(Tuition times vary according to the needs of the group)
This course aims to equip parents with the skills to help their children with primary school Irish.
Family Learning Courses are free and open to adults who have not completed secondary school education or who are not familiar with our education system.

 

Return to Learning (Co. Council)
(Co. Council/VEC) Programme

This programme is funded by the County Council and delivered by the VEC for County Council workers for one day per week.

 

Return to Education (Fás)
(Fás/ VEC)

This programme is funded by FÃ?S and delivered by the VEC for workers on community schemes for one day per week.

 

English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL)

A course in basic english can be arranged for migrant workers.
(This is a Fee paying course).
