DEIS stands for Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools. The programme provides additional resources to schools with high levels of educational disadvantage, with the aim of improving attendance, participation and outcomes.
What DEIS supports
- Additional teaching and support staff in participating schools.
- Programmes for literacy and numeracy.
- Attendance and retention measures.
- Access to school meals and other supports in some schools.
- Planning and review focused on the needs of the school community.
How schools are included
Schools are identified using a national assessment of disadvantage that considers factors such as unemployment, family structure, education levels and access to resources. The programme is reviewed periodically. Inclusion is not automatic and is not based on a single indicator.
What it means for families
If your school is in the programme, you may notice additional supports such as smaller classes, homework clubs, meals or family liaison. Ask the school what is available. Supports vary by school and by the phase of the programme.
Working with the community
DEIS works best when schools connect with families and local services. The Committee supports schools to build those links through home school liaison, community education and learner support.
DEIS is a national programme. The Committee implements it in its schools alongside other supports for access and inclusion.
