ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. Classes are for adults whose first language is not English and who want to improve speaking, listening, reading and writing. Learners join for many reasons: work, further study, helping children with school, or simply feeling more at home in the community.
What classes cover
- Everyday conversation and pronunciation.
- Reading and writing for practical situations.
- English for work, interviews and workplaces.
- Digital skills and online communication.
- Understanding Irish services, forms and appointments.
Levels
Classes are organised by level, from beginner to more advanced. You do not need a certificate to join. A short conversation with the tutor or organiser helps place you in a group where you can progress comfortably.
Where to study
Provision is organised locally. ESOL has been offered in Tuam, Loughrea, Headford and Gort, with groups arranged according to demand. Ask the adult education office which class is nearest to you and whether a waiting list is open.
