St. Jarlath's Vocational School, Mountbellew, has provided education in the area at both Second and Adult Education since 1932. The School's mission statement is to encourage the students to reach their full potential in a caring and learning environment. The Post Leaving Certificate Courses (P.L.C.s) being offered at this school are designed to help students gain skills and enhance their employment potential.

The courses on offer; Childcare/Classroom Assistant, Healthcare Support/Classroom Assistant and Information Technology/ECDL are to be highly recommended.

    FETAC Level 2 Healthcare Support,
    OCR Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching & Learning.

  • Leaving Certificate/PLC Combination
    Opportunity to Repeat a Leaving Certificate Subject in Conjunction with the PLC course.  



Childcare Studies with Classroom Assistant

This course is designed for people who are interested in working with young children in a variety of settings, including nurseries, crèches, and schools.  Many schools now employ a classroom assistant and, on completion of the course, students are qualified to take up such a position.

Duration: 1 year

  • Courses are of a one year duration (from September – May) and available free of charge.
  • Post Leaving Cert Grants may be available.


Suitable for

  • Those who wish to continue their education or to Return to Learning (Co. Council)/workforce after a number of years.
  • Those who wish to access third level education via a FETAC Award.
  • Those who wish to develop new skills.

Day School, P.L.C. and Adult Education.

Times / months available:

September for PLC and Day Students and January for Adult Education.  However request classes in any topic in Adult Education can be entertained at any time.


Maintenance Grants

Applicants for P.L.C. courses may qualify for maintenance grants subject to the usual means testing. To apply for a maintenance grant, contact your local Vocational Education Committee. (Co. Galway V.E.C. – 091-874260)


Certification and Assessment

Students are prepared for the assessment and certification requirements of FETAC Level 5 (Department of Education & Science)
