Overview of Service / Programmes & Certification Offered
The Tracking Officer for both South and West Galway covers the towns and catchment areas of:
- Kinvara
- Gort
- Woodford
- Portumna
- Kylemore
- Letterfrack
- Cashel
The service aims to identify and track early school leavers who are currently out of the education system or unemployed. The service is available to those aged between 16 and 21 years. Once identified the young person is referred to appropriate training or educational opportunities, or employment if deemed suitable. The Advocate worker at this stage plays a supporting role in mentoring the young person, offering guidance, advice and support.
The Tracking Officer is helped in this identification process by working closely with Secondary School Principals, Social Workers, Youth Workers, Family Support Workers, Educational Welfare Officers, Home School Liaison, Traveller Training Centres, Youthreach, V.T.O.S, FÃ?S and other agencies working with young people.
The service also forges links with education providers, trainers and employers to help place young people in suitable programmes. Allied to this, the Tracking Officer works in tandem with the Adult Guidance Service.
The Tracking Officer is also involved in setting up new educational initiatives wherever an ducational need is not currently being met. Most of these initiatives are funded under the Back to Education Initiative – however the service also looks for complementary funding from other agencies.
